Recommended Engine Horsepower Guide for Flail Mowers

The following guide provides recommended minimum engine horsepower based on typical mowing conditions. Actual power requirements may vary depending on grass density, terrain and travel speed.

Our team can help match the right mower to your tractor and application. Please use the information below as a general guide only.

These are minimum engine horsepower recommendations. Always choose a mower that is within your tractor’s engine horsepower and lifting capacity.

Weight is also an important factor. For example, while the chart below shows a 2400 mm flail mower requires a minimum of 48 engine HP in easy-going conditions, many 48 HP tractors may not have sufficient three-point linkage lift capacity to safely handle a mower of this size. If you provide your tractor’s make and model, our team can confirm both the horsepower and lift capacity requirements.

Flail Mower Width Easy-Going Conditions Long Grass & Heavy Conditions
1100 mm 22 Engine HP 33 Engine HP
1300 mm 26 Engine HP 39 Engine HP
1500 mm 30 Engine HP 45 Engine HP
1600 mm 32 Engine HP 48 Engine HP
1800 mm 36 Engine HP 54 Engine HP
2000 mm 40 Engine HP 60 Engine HP
2100 mm 42 Engine HP 63 Engine HP
2400 mm 48 Engine HP 72 Engine HP

Simple Rule of Thumb

  • Easy-Going Conditions: Allow approximately 2 engine HP per 100 mm of cutting width.
  • Long Grass & Heavy Conditions: Allow approximately 3 engine HP per 100 mm of cutting width.

* Easy-Going Conditions: Regular mowing, maintained pasture, lawns and light vegetation.

** Long Grass & Heavy Conditions: Tall grass, scrub, dense pasture, weeds, rough slashing and other demanding operating conditions.

Which Size Should I Choose?

If you generally mow in easy-going conditions, you may consider choosing the largest recommended mower on the above chart. However, seasonal growth can quickly change conditions making a smaller mower a better choice.

If the grass becomes long and heavy but you chose a size more suited to easy conditions, you can often manage by making two passes. The first pass can be made with the mower raised on the 3pl slightly or set to a higher cutting height. Once the grass has been reduced, a second pass at the desired height will produce a better finish.

You can also reduce the horsepower required by overlapping your passes, effectively reducing the cutting width.

If you regularly mow long grass and heavy vegetation, we recommend choosing a mower size that your tractor can comfortably handle in all conditions. A slightly smaller mower often allows faster ground speeds and can complete the job just as quickly as a larger mower that may require you to operate in a lower gear.

A smaller mower that suits all conditions is often the best overall choice.

Need Advice?

Our recommendations are based on engine horsepower rather than PTO horsepower, allowing for normal driveline power losses.

The mower’s weight is just as important as its horsepower requirements. Always ensure your tractor’s three-point linkage has adequate lifting capacity.

If you are operating near your tractor’s lifting limit, a front-end loader, wheel weights or front ballast weights can help improve stability and counterbalance the mower.

If you are unsure which mower is right for your tractor, simply provide us with your tractor’s make and model and we’ll be happy to recommend the most suitable option.
