22-Inch Disc Harrow Tractor Horsepower Guide

Choosing the right disc harrow for your tractor ensures better performance, improved fuel efficiency, reduced wheel slip and longer equipment life. The recommendations below are based on typical Australian operating conditions and assume a correctly ballasted tractor with good traction.

Note: Actual horsepower requirements will vary depending on soil type, moisture levels, working depth, terrain, tyre choice and ballast. These recommendations are intended as a practical guide only.

🟩 Recommended Tractor Horsepower

Disc Harrow Model     Disc Configuration    Light / Sandy Soil Average Conditions Heavy Clay / Deeper Cutting Maximum Tractor HP
1200 mm 12 × 22″ discs 30–40 hp 40–55 hp 55–70 hp 120 hp
1650 mm 16 × 22″ discs 45–55 hp 55–75 hp 75–90 hp 120 hp
2100 mm 20 × 22″ discs 60–70 hp 70–90 hp 90–120 hp 120 hp

🟩 Implement Weight & Recommended Three-Point Linkage Lift Capacity

Disc Harrow

Model

Implement Weight Recommended Minimum

3-Point Lift Capacity

1200 mm 440 kg 650 kg
1650 mm 600 kg 900 kg
2100 mm 710 kg 1,100 kg

Why is a higher lift capacity recommended?

Because a disc harrow is carried behind the tractor, the implement’s load centre sits well behind the three-point linkage lift arms. This creates additional leverage on the tractor, meaning the required lifting capacity is greater than the implement’s weight alone. Choosing a tractor with additional lift capacity improves lifting performance, stability and transport safety.

🟩 Quick Reference

Disc Harrow Size Recommended Tractor Range
1200 mm 40–70 hp
1650 mm 55–90 hp
2100 mm 70–120 hp

🟩 Choosing the Right Disc Harrow for Your Tractor

  • Match the disc harrow to your tractor’s engine horsepower for the conditions you expect to work in.
  • Ensure your tractor has adequate three-point linkage lift capacity for the chosen implement.
  • Heavier soil, steeper terrain and deeper cultivation will require more horsepower than lighter working conditions.
  • If operating close to your tractor’s maximum lift capacity, front ballast or a front-end loader can improve stability and provide additional counterbalance during lifting and transport.
