Choosing the correct tractor size helps achieve the best ripping performance while maintaining good traction and safe operation. The recommendations below are based on average Australian soil conditions. Hard, dry or compacted ground may require a larger tractor.

• Tractor horsepower recommendations are based on engine horsepower, not PTO horsepower.
• Do not exceed the maximum recommended tractor horsepower for each implement.
• Good traction is just as important as horsepower. Four-wheel drive and suitable ballast will improve ripping performance.
• Performance will vary depending on soil type, moisture content, ripping depth and available traction.
• The Recommended Tractor – Average Conditions column is intended as a guide for normal Australian soil conditions.
• The Hard, Dry or Compacted Soil column indicates the tractor horsepower recommended when working in more demanding ground conditions. These recommendations do not exceed the implement’s maximum horsepower rating.
• In softer or previously worked ground, many tractors can comfortably operate below the upper end of the recommended range.
• Choosing a tractor with adequate weight and traction will often improve ripping performance as much as additional horsepower.
